Although apatite crystals from the Yates Mine, Otter Lake, Quebec are well known to minerals collectors, gem quality apatite is extremely rare. Crystals can be as large a 30 cm or more in length. They are typically a medium-dark green colour and occur embedded in orange calcite.
With a hardness of 5 on Mohs' hardness scale, apatite is too soft and brittle to use in rings. If set with care, apatite can be used in earrings or pendants.
