Rhodochrosite gems from Mont Saint-Hilaire vary in colour from reddish brown to orange-red to a wonderful saturated pink colour.  While several faceted stones larger than 10 carats are known, most are much smaller.  Any rhodochrosite gem over 2 carats from Mont Saint-Hilaire should be considered large.   With a hardness of 3.5 - 4 on Moh's hardness scale and its three directions of perfect cleavage, rhodochrosite is considered far too soft and fragile to use in rings.  Rhodochrosite could potentially be used in earrings and pendants if set with great care.
