VILLIAUMITE - Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec

The villiaumite gemstones offered for sale on this page come from Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec.  This locality is famous among gem and mineral collectors throughout the world for its wide variety of fine minerals and rare gemstones.  Many of the gem and mineral species found at Mont Saint-Hilaire are found nowhere else on earth.

Villiaumite gems from Mont Saint-Hilaire are generally medium to dark red and pink.  Several colourless stones exist.  While faceted stones larger than 5 carat are known, most are much smaller.  Any villiaumite gem over 2 carats from Mont Saint-Hiliare should be considered large.  With a hardness of about 2.5 on Moh's hardness scale and its 3 directions of perfect cleavage, villiaumite is too soft and fragile to use in rings.  In addition, villiaumite is water soluble which makes faceting a real challenge.  Great care must be taken when handling villiaumite because moisture from your skin can dull the polish.  Villiaumite is truly a collector's gemstone!
